Hey, Duane here! Very early 2002, I purchased my 13th car, the blue 2002 C5 Corvette Z06. At that time, I also owned the red 1994 Toyota Supra, black 1993 GMC Typhoon, and dark blue 1969 Lincoln Mark III.

Eight Cars 2002-2006

Purchased 2002, Sold 2006
This purchase might have been a BMW M Coupe, but the new C5 Corvette Z06 was faster and far more sensory. It became a great companion to my Supra and Typhoon.
Purchased 2002, Sold 2002
The owner was deploying overseas in 2002 and selling his 1980 Mazda RX7. Too nice to pass up, I put this RX7 to bed in my rental garage and never drove it again.
Purchased 2003, Sold 2004
I stumbled upon this pristine Lincoln Mark III while searching for a bad-weather car. In beautiful original condition and too nice for bad weather, the seller made an offer I could not refuse.
Purchased 2003, Sold 2004
Still searching for a bad-weather car, this Lincoln Mark IV was my eventual choice. Such use was disrespectful to the car, but I really wanted a Mark IV and this was my justification for purchasing it.
Purchased 2004, Sold 2006
A spontaneous purchase, this special-edition Beetle was surprisingly quick and made me smile. It also eliminated the ongoing guilt of using the Lincoln Mark IV in rain and snow.
With only about 150 hand-built annually in South Bend, Indiana, I wanted one but missed the first opportunity when this Avanti II was for sale. Surprisingly, a year later, it was for sale again.
Friends commented they never thought they’d see me driving a Beetle. Maybe it was time for a different bad-weather car. This new Ford Mustang GT had my attention in 2006.
I really liked my blue 2002 C5 Corvette Z06, but then the next generation C6 was released. Much cooler looking and featuring a 100-hp bump over mine, I focused on trying to afford one.
See a Pattern?
My first 20 cars, including these eight described above, were all two-door vehicles, all distinctively fun, and either fast or classically elegant.
Money and garage space were always limitations. I had only a two-car garage which necessitated renting additional garage spots from friends. Then in 2002, I doubled my car storage by purchasing a rental house specifically because of its garage. I could store two cars there while the rental income paid the mortgage. Three years later in 2005, I replaced my home of 13 years with a bank-repo property, in part because of its four-car garage. That made for combined storage of six cars.
Party of 4
Having purchased two new cars within seven months in 2006 (2006 Mustang and 2007 Corvette) and selling their predecessors (2003 Beetle and 2002 Corvette), I remained at four cars garaged at home. They consisted of the 2007 Corvette Z06, 2006 Mustang GT, 1993 GMC Typhoon, and 1978 Avanti II.
My garage at the rental house was empty. Next Sunday, see what opportunity that offered. Thanks, and always drive with allure!
